Sam:Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo? It'll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they'll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields... and eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?
Frodo:No, Sam. I can't recall the taste of food... nor the sound of water... nor the touch of grass. I'm... naked in the dark, with nothing, no veil... between me... and the wheel of fire! I can see him... with my waking eyes!
Sam:Then let us be rid of it... once and for all! Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!

“They say there is a young lady in [New Haven] who is beloved of that Great Being, who made and rules the world, and that there are certain seasons in which this Great Being, in some way or another invisible, comes to her and fills her mind with exceeding sweet delight, and that she hardly cares for anything except to meditate on him.

Therefore, if you present all the world before her, with the richest of its treasures, she disregards it and cares not for it, and is unmindful of any pain or affliction. She has a strange sweetness in her mind and a singular purity in her affections; is most just and conscientious in all her conduct; and you could not persuade her to do anything wrong or sinful if you would give her all the world.

She is of a wonderful sweetness, calmness and universal benevolence of mind. She will sometimes go about from place to place, singing sweetly and seems to be always full of joy and pleasure; and no one knows for what. She loves to be alone, walking in the field and groves, and seems to have someone invisible always conversing with her.”

Bend (Joseph) - Brandon Heath (youtube & grooveshark)

I am not my family tree

These are different leaves, you know

There are miles and miles between

My roots and what I’m trying to grow

I’m not the slave they sold

Nor am I royalty

I’ve worn them both, the finest coat

The rages that barely covered me

chorus (below)

I am not my past mistakes

Labeled by some place and time

Nor am I a trophy case

Trying to main to maintin my shine

I have dreamed a thousand dreams

Watched a grain in famine grow

I am not my family tree

I have branches of my own

chorus (below)

Does fate resign us to

Find shelter for our wounds

Beneath the battered roof of broken dreams?

But I will choose to stand In the shadow of your

Hand And see what grows when grace has sown the seed

These are different leaves, you know

chorus:

But there’s mercy in the soil

Mercy in the sun

Learning to forgive what cannot be undone

And what was meant was meant to harm

Can’t harm you in the end

Stepped out on a limb I thought might break

But Love said, it will only bend

It will only bend

Beautiful In the Ordinary →

(via Shannon)

I live in an ordinary city, on an ordinary street.

Lucky for me, I married someone who holds the ordinary very dear; neighbourhood walks, butter on toast, hand-me-down furniture, the sound of the upstairs neighbours vacuuming.  I have learnt that the most sacred things are most often, the simply ordinary ones; undocumented habits, modest traditions.  The he way he does up his coat, the way she takes her coffee.  If we have these things, we have everything.

My city has a lot to aspire to.  It is, for half the year, bitter and dark and frozen. It is as far from the ocean as a city can be - in every direction.  There is only sky and land and more sky.  Oh, and wind.  There is wind.

But this is where I live.   And what I’ve found is that it’s as good as any place.  It is what we make it.  In fact, I’ve found that if people from my city share a common characteristic it is a persistent ingenuity. After all, if you can find beauty in day after day after day of sub zero temperatures, silent streets and shovelling snow, you can do anything.

Home, for me, is in keeping track of the ordinary things: knowing how he turns the page, when the porch light comes on, and how many months till spring.

The Choice - by Julia

For I hope that I will always choose to not let the chance pass me by.

  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to kiss your spaghetti-covered face instead of waiting until it is washed.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to hold your hand instead of the camera.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to rock you to sleep instead of sending you back to bed alone.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to play dress-up with you instead of working on my ‘To-Do List’.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to treasure the moment instead of wishing for better timing.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to smile at your painting instead of frowning at the stain on your shirt .
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to read your favorite book for the 100th time instead of insisting we pick out a different one.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to give you ‘now’ instead of promising ‘later’.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to be your best friend instead of just being ‘the mom’.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to listen to you instead of talking myself.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to say “I love you” instead of giving unneeded lectures.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to help you face obstacles instead of allowing you to be daunted by them.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to build unshakable bridges between us instead of impregnable walls.
  • I hope that someday when I have the choice, I will choose to tell you “I’m glad I chose you.” instead of leaving you to wonder.

Thank you for letting me post this piece on my blog, Julia! Thank you for writing it, for sharing something that is obviously close to your heart with all of us. It’s truly beautiful. That is exactly the Mom I hope & pray to be some day, too. Keep looking up, girl!
